Zula Zanzibar sits right in the centre of Paje on the south-east coast, on a beach the owners call the most beautiful in Zanzibar. The name means ‘brilliant’ or ‘ahead’, and the hotel aims to support the local economy by using mostly local suppliers and materials.

Its 33 rooms are spread over ground and first floors, and most look over the pool area towards the Indian Ocean. All have air conditioning, a fan, a safe, desk, seating area and mosquito nets, with double or twin beds; village-view rooms above reception catch the sunset, and the two-bedroom Zula Beachhouse has its own plunge pool and private beach area right on the sand.

Days are spent between the pool, the sun terrace and the hotel’s private strip of beach, with local food, cocktails and music – and Paje’s famous kitesurfing conditions just offshore.
