About this property

Zanzibar Serena Hotel occupies two restored seafront buildings in the heart of Stone Town – an 18th-century residence once owned by a Chinese doctor and the 19th-century Extelcoms House – which opened as a hotel in 1997. The restoration kept the original Swahili and Arabic detailing, from carved wooden doors and fretwork cabinets to brass lanterns and high, whitewashed ceilings.

All 51 rooms and suites look out over the Indian Ocean or the old town, and the seafront Prime rooms add L-shaped balconies with a double hammock. Guests can eat all day at Baharia, take dinner at the rooftop Terrace seafood restaurant as dhows sail past at sunset, or have cocktails with live taarab music at Masahani Bar. There is an oceanfront pool, the Maisha spa for massages, and a small conference room for up to 40 people.

The hotel is a short walk from Forodhani Gardens, the Old Fort, the House of Wonders and the Darajani market, and the team can arrange spice farm, Prison Island and dhow excursions.
