Upendo – ‘love’ in Swahili – is a stylish boutique hotel on a secluded tidal beach at Michamvi on Zanzibar’s south-east coast, close to The Rock restaurant. Founded by Zanzibari Trish Dhanak, it pairs barefoot luxury with a strong commitment to sustainability and the local community.
Accommodation is in four private beachfront villas and their suites: adults-only villas with rooftop pools for couples, the two-bedroom Zuci with its own infinity pool, and the six-bedroom Villa Shiva, whose sea-view suites and garden rooms can also be booked individually. Villas come with butler service, private pools and outdoor dining and lounge areas, and interiors blend contemporary design with Swahili charm.
The social heart is the infinity pool and lounge with daybeds, gourmet fusion food made with local produce and spices, and creative cocktails at sunset. There is a spa with signature treatments, Sunday brunch and Thursday sunset live music, and the team organises excursions from dolphin trips to Stone Town tours.
