About this property
The Island Pongwe is an adults-only boutique lodge built on a natural coral rock about 100 metres off the shore of quiet Pongwe bay, on Zanzibar’s north-east coast, 34 km from Stone Town. Depending on the tide you walk or take a canoe to the island, which has wonderful views of both sunrise and sunset.
There are just six villas – five 35 m² standard villas and the 70 m² Sultan Villa – all facing the ocean, hidden among the trees and each with its own veranda. The rooms are deliberately eco-friendly, with no air conditioning, television or electronic music, so guests can disconnect and enjoy total privacy and nature.
Since opening in 2018 its gourmet restaurant has become a destination in its own right, serving refined, artistic dishes built on local flavours. Massages by the sea, cultural experiences and trips to Stone Town round out a stay designed for couples and seasoned travellers.
