About this property
Tembo House Hotel sits right on the beach in Shangani and was the first beachfront hotel inside Stone Town’s UNESCO World Heritage area, welcoming guests since 1994. The whitewashed building has a long history of its own, and its guest list over the years is said to include Mahatma Gandhi, Freddie Mercury and the explorer Henry Morton Stanley.
Rooms are furnished in traditional Swahili style with carved four-poster beds, stained-glass arches and balconies looking over the garden, the pool or the sea. There are two pools – a larger one in the central courtyard and a first-floor infinity plunge pool facing the sunset – along with a tropical garden, a small gym and a private cinema with a snack bar. Breakfast is included, and the restaurant serves Swahili and international dishes with tables on the sand.
The Old Fort, House of Wonders, Forodhani Gardens and Palace Museum are a few minutes’ walk away, and the hotel can arrange boat trips, spice farm visits and Stone Town tours.
