About this property
Sazani Beach Lodge started life as a family beach house on the east side of Nungwi, built in the 1990s and opened to travellers in 1996; three generations later it still describes itself as ‘a home, not a hotel’. The name comes from an old Swahili word for ‘left over’ – land too rocky to farm – where the family instead saw a home by the sea.
The handful of rooms sit above a quiet cove and lagoon, with wide east-facing windows for the morning light, earthy colours, rustic wood and furniture crafted from old dhow boats by local artisans. Choose from the king rooms Kaskazi and Kusi, the beach banda at the foot of the cliff, or the sea-view bedrooms of Hiraeth, the original house, with its shared lounge, kitchenette and mezzanine deck.
Days here are about slowing down: hammocks facing the ocean, walks along the beach and lagoon, swims with the tides and beach fires when the wind allows. The lodge has solar back-up power, but Zanzibar’s grid can have outages. Airport transfers are available.
