About this property
Mwezi – ‘moon’ in Swahili – is an eco-minded boutique resort on the beach at Jambiani, a traditional village on Zanzibar’s south-east coast where the tides paint the lagoon a different colour every hour. Designed by Italian designer Sandro Gurioli, it combines ancient building methods of clay, wood and makuti thatch with contemporary style, recycled materials and modern African art.
Guests stay in shell-like houses arranged in two staggered rows so everyone has an ocean view – Moon, Full Moon, Pool and Beach Houses, each with air conditioning, a private entrance and a veranda, and furniture designed with local craftspeople. The newer La Luna Suite Apartments, built from certified wood around a 35-metre salt-water infinity pool, add kitchenettes for longer stays.
The grounds are shaded by more than 100 coconut palms and fruit trees, with two salt-water infinity pools that spare the village’s fresh water, a seaside massage centre and a shop selling crafts from local non-profits. Every Wednesday there is a Swahili dinner with live music and acrobats, and the team runs guided walks through Jambiani village as well as island excursions.
