About this property
Kholle House was built in 1860 by Princess Sayyida Kholle, a daughter of the Sultan, as a place to display her treasures and entertain guests. After a three-year restoration it reopened as a boutique hotel tucked behind the Old Dispensary in Malindi, less than two minutes’ walk from the ferry terminal.
The interiors mix Swahili and French-Creole style: turmeric-yellow walls, stained-glass details, nutmeg-coloured floors with marble inlays from the original house, four-poster beds and a large collection of antiques. Rooms range from cosy Classic rooms to Prestige suites with balconies over the old town and port, plus two self-catering apartments with kitchenettes for families or longer stays. Every rate includes an à la carte breakfast.
Behind the walls is a quiet garden with a private pool and a Swahili veranda, and a winding staircase leads up to the rooftop terrace and Tea House with views across Stone Town, the harbour and the offshore islands. Meals are served in the antique-filled dining room or on the poolside patio.
