About this property
Jafferji House is the restored family home of Zanzibari photographer Javed Jafferji, opened as a ten-suite boutique hotel in 2012 after years of careful restoration. The sandstone house was completed in 1912 and has been in the Jafferji family since 1945; it still shows rare Fatimid-style arches and is filled with antiques, traditional furniture and Javed’s photographs of Zanzibar’s people and landscapes.
Each suite is designed around a story – explorers such as Stanley and Livingstone, Princess Salme, Freddie Mercury, the Maasai and the Sultans of Zanzibar – with handcrafted wooden beds, Moroccan-style cement baths, botanical Zuri toiletries, flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi. Three courtyards bring light and greenery into the house, and a rooftop restaurant and terrace look out over the town.
The hotel is on Gizenga Street in the heart of Stone Town, close to the Old Fort, Forodhani Gardens and the seafront, and offers Swahili cooking lessons, coffee ceremonies and guided island tours.
