Essque Zalu Zanzibar is a large, design-led resort on the north coast at Nungwi, built on a bold scale rather than trying to blend in: it claims the tallest makuti thatched roof on the island, along with a sprawling lagoon-style pool, two restaurants and three bars. A long wooden jetty runs out over the turquoise water to a restaurant and bar at the end, a favourite spot at sunset.
Accommodation is split between 40 suites and 8 private villas. The suites sit under traditional pitched makuti roofs, are built from local materials and decorated with African artwork, and look over the gardens or the ocean; they sleep up to three adults, or two adults and two children. The three- and four-bedroom villas each come with a private plunge pool, dining and living rooms, a private spa room and a fully equipped kitchen.
Guests can learn Swahili dishes at the Maisha Cookery Studio, book curated ‘Essquepades’ experiences, or join snorkelling, kayaking, dhow and island excursions arranged by the resort.
