About this property

Emerson Spice is a boutique hotel in a restored 19th-century Swahili mansion on Tharia Street, in the middle of Stone Town’s UNESCO-listed old quarter. The house once belonged to the Mwinyi Mkuu, the last Swahili ruler of Zanzibar, and today its carved balconies and stained-glass windows wrap around an open inner courtyard.

There are twelve rooms, and no two are alike. Each is named after a heroine from opera, film or Zanzibar history – from Aida and Desdemona to the taarab singer Siti binti Saad – and decorated to match with hand-painted murals, antique Zanzibar beds, coloured glass and verandas over the old town. All rooms have air conditioning, a fridge, drinking water and a tea and coffee station, with kikoi towels and organic toiletries in the bathrooms.

The rooftop Tea House serves Swahili high tea, lunch and dinner with sunset views over the rooftops and minarets, while the Secret Garden restaurant sits among the ruins of the old garden. The airport is about 20 minutes by car, and the seafront is an eight-minute walk; the final stretch to the door is on foot through the alleys, as cars cannot reach the entrance.
