About this property
The Blue Oyster is a small, cosy, family-run hotel right on the white-sand beach at Jambiani, a traditional fishing village on Zanzibar’s south-east coast. It was opened in 1999 by German owner Klaus Beiser and is now run by the second generation of the family with a team largely from the village.
There are 18 rooms: sea-view rooms upstairs with balconies or terraces facing the sunrise, and budget-friendly garden-view rooms around a tropical courtyard. All have hand-carved Zanzibari beds with mosquito nets, a ceiling fan, safe and en-suite shower with local Inaya toiletries. Since 2025 there is also a new swimming pool.
The sea-view restaurant serves fresh seafood, grills and Swahili dishes, and the beach bar has a daily happy-hour cocktail. Local women Zena and Kazija offer massages with coconut oil and spices, and the hotel has a tour desk, transfers, a library and laundry service. It is certified for responsible tourism and works closely with the local community.
