About this property
Flame Tree Cottages is a small, independent beachfront hotel on Nungwi’s turquoise coastline at the northern tip of Zanzibar, welcoming guests since 2004. Its individually styled cottages are scattered through a lush tropical garden of coconut palms, frangipani, banana and avocado trees – and, of course, flame trees.
Each room has its own entrance and a spacious veranda where breakfast is served, and is furnished with locally made Swahili wood furniture, traditional Zanzibari beds and antiques. All rooms are air-conditioned and en suite, with a fridge, kettle and toaster, and the layouts range from doubles and twins to family cottages and an upstairs honeymoon suite.
There is a garden pool with loungers, and a gate leads straight onto the beach for swimming, snorkelling and dhow sails; the team also organises snorkelling, fishing and dolphin trips. Most staff come from Nungwi village, and the hotel was built with local labour and supplies.
